A recent Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education meeting ended in disorder after a dispute over the seating of District 2 representative Matthew Youngblood, raising new questions about governance, representation, and public trust. Mr. Youngblood had taken the oath of office the previous day before a notary and appeared at the meeting prepared to assume the District 2 seat. Acting Chair Doug Knight declined to recognize him as a board member, citing House Bill 1035 and his belief that the Clerk of Superior Court now has the authority to fill the vacancy. During discussion of the issue, Board Member Anita Kurn attempted to read portions of board policy aloud. I am writing to you as the duly elected Iredell-Statesville Board Member representing District 7. On June 24, 2026, I was removed from a public school board meeting at the direction of the Acting Chair. This action exceeded the authority of the chair under North Carolina law and violated my due process rights as an elected official.   North Carolina law does not grant the chair the power to unilaterally remove an elected board member from a meeting. Under G.S. 143-318.17, a person may be removed from a public meeting only when there is “willful, actual disruption” and the person has refused to stop after being directed to do so. Reading or referencing board policy during a meeting is a core duty of an elected board member. There is no established time limit for recognized board members to speak under North Carolina statute, board policy, or Roberts Rules of Order. How are NC Legislators planning to change election laws for Iredell County residents?    HB 1035, formerly SB 818, has been recently amended to change the method of replacing Iredell County school board members who vacate their position on the board if the person chosen is not accepted by remaining school board members. Until now, the political party of the board member who vacated his or her seat has had the authority to select a new board member when a vacancy occurred. Now NC legislators seek to take away the control of selecting a new person from the corresponding political party of the member who left and  giving that authority to the clerk of superior court. This would occur if there was any failure of the board to seat a selected board member. In other words, if the school board members did not agree with the selection, an appointee would select a new board member. MOORESVILLE, N.C. — On June 18, 2026, at approximately 12:29 p.m., Mooresville Police Department officers responded to 142 Serviceberry Way in reference to a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim, 46, on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers immediately rendered aid until Mooresville Fire Department and Iredell EMS personnel arrived on the scene. The victim was subsequently transported to Carolinas Medical Center Main with serious injuries. Mooresville Police Department detectives responded and assumed control of the investigation. The suspect was identified as Benjamin Guerrero, 36, of Saginaw, Texas. He was located at the scene and initially detained by responding officers. Following the investigation, Guerrero was placed under arrest and charged with Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury with Intent to Kill. This investigation is ongoing. Two weeks ago we tried the new waffle house in Troutman. Very helpful and friendly staff. Food came fast and tasted great it has a great ambiance. The could have a high score of 8 benni points but they served unfiltered water. That tasted like a swimming pool. Please get a water filter installed so you would be able to get a high score of 8 benni points.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Effective immediately, the Town of Mooresville is transitioning to enhanced Stage 2 water conservation measures to reduce nonessential water use and protect long-term water supply reliability. These measures align with surrounding municipalities that also draw water from the Catawba-Wateree System. The following restrictions apply to all customers served by the Town’s water system:   Mandatory watering schedules: Now through May 31: Outside irrigation is restricted to 6 p.m. - 6 a.m., daily. The Town will issue warnings to residents and businesses who water outside these windows. Starting June 1: Irrigation shifts to a mandatory two-day schedule (Tuesdays & Saturdays, 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.). A written warning by the Town will be provided for the first offense, and fines will be imposed beginning with the second offense. MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Based on the authority given by Chapter 3, Section 307.1.1 of the North Carolina Fire Code, Mooresville Fire-Rescue in conjunction with the NC Forestry Service is lifting the burning ban that prohibits open burning within 100 feet of a structure or anywhere in the town limits effective May 8, 2026, at 8 a.m.   As a reminder, outdoor open burning of yard waste, such as leaves, branches, and plant material, construction materials, lumber, and other products, including trash, newspapers, or other non-vegetative material, is prohibited at all times under Mooresville Municipal Code Section 10-12. Burning in fire pits (commercial or constructed) can resume. MOORESVILLE, N.C. – In response to the ongoing drought conditions in the region, the Town of Mooresville is implementing mandatory water use restrictions beginning May 8, 2026. These restrictions follow Stage 2 Low Inflow Protocol (LIP) guidance from the Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Advisory Group (CW-DMAG).
